What’s Gonna Happen Next?

January 1, 2020 marked the beginning of a brand-new decade that many looked at with optimism and a chance at a new lease on life.

Now, six months in many are wondering if this year could get any worse. Wondering whether what’s passed so far could be a foreboding indicator of what’s yet to come.

Remember when the year had just begun?

It was a beautiful January, weather was mild, all things were calm and going smoothly. Many of us looked forward to either dinner reservations, fabulous vacations we planned, or family events to enjoy and add to our collection of loving memories.

And to top it off, in 2019 we had one of the best stock markets in years. We all wanted to frame and hang up our year end investment statements. Wow!

“Retirement’s gonna be so easy!”

Then it happened. A stretch of bad events kicked off that would leave a huge mark on the rest of the year.

We experienced one surprise explosion after another. It couldn’t be just one thing, it turned into a cluster of horrors affecting all of our daily lives and those around us.

A series of major events causing considerable human suffering. From the pandemic, to massive global economic disruptions, the price of oil and gasoline collapsed, civil conflicts and confrontations, tariffs, and so much pain and suffering.

And then after digesting the worlds calamities and realizing the seriousness of the pandemic, this horrible nightmare helped drive the stock market down over 30% causing our investment savings to crater in value.

Oh my, “Retirement isn’t going to be so easy!”

Now here we are. What can go wrong next?

Some better news all around. Tremendous government stimulus, lower interest rates, unemployment benefits finally being disbursed, businesses starting to mention their opening, and less jobless claims throughout the country. All this news helps to establish some comfort, even bringing a sense of relief, although it might only be temporary.

Stocks have had huge market swings and daily surprises, but have recovered somewhat for now. We almost want to peak at our latest investment statements again.

As we all know lots can happen today, and good things can change on a dime. We don’t know what the future holds for us and we don’t know for sure if all this bad news is over yet.

There may be untold surprises directly around the corner. So many potential and different side effects are created from overzealous stimulus, historically low interest rates, giant deficits, huge unemployment, and businesses that might never come back. Not to mention international issues that are about to pop and so many obstacles that might directly affect values of our investment savings.

During this horrible period of time how well did you cope? How
did your financial plan do? Were you frightened? Did you sell out at the bottom in March? Did you purchase or invest in something that you are not pleased with today?

Did you suffer from anxiousness and did your heart skip a beat every time you viewed your monthly statements? Did your 401(K) temporarily turn into a 201(K)?

Most people said they had difficulty contacting their broker. Did you even hear from your advisor? Wouldn’t it have felt good to hear from your advisor regularly and to receive competent advice, giving you confidence with your retirement plans?

Wouldn’t it have felt good to trust “your retirement plan” and know where your income will come from during your retirement?

We often hear from our new clients how distressed they were, concerned they were do-it-yourself investing or worried that they didn’t hear from their previous stockbroker.

So many people are concerned about huge losses to their principal. Really worried the account losses they suffered in the market could happen AGAIN!
