Happy Father’s Day!

On this special day one might ask what makes a good father?

A good father is a person who leads by example, shows a balance of being comforting and nurturing, yet masculine. He is honest, open, and willing to defend his family. He balances his needs and his family’s needs to ensure his family is as reasonably happy and thriving as can be.

For me, my dad was not only extra special, he was my greatest fan, my biggest cheerleader. He offered great advice, was always in my corner, and let me know how much he loved me.

Did you know Father’s Day is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year and it all began when a young woman wanted to honor her Father.

In May of 1909 Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington sat in church listen to a Mother’s Day sermon. She decided she wanted to designate a day for her dad also, his name was William Jackson Smart. You see, Sonora’s Mom had died in childbirth, and Dodd’s father, a Civil War veteran, had taken the responsibility of single-handedly raising the newborn and his other five children. At first it was just part of the church service, giving out roses during the service to honor their fathers, but then the honoring of fathers grew. Celebrating annually, Dodd brought her son along on a horse drawn carriage ride throughout the city delivering roses and gifts to the many home-bound fathers.

So many dads appreciated her unselfish efforts. Many presidents later, Father’s Day was formed and became the holiday we officially celebrate today.
