A Dog Wagging Tale

It was a cold and rainy evening just after dusk, the dark clouds were filled with lightning and a wicked storm was brewing. It would be a horrible, frightening night especially to be left outside, let alone being captured and held in a cage with hundreds of stray dogs.

Somehow, Patsy, a really cute brown, black and white four year old “Cheagle” which is a mix of Chihuahua and Beagle, unfortunately found herself in that very situation. Caught, caged, and in a jail like compound, deep in the outlands of rural Georgia. Her captors were professionals whose mandate was to gather and capture by force stray dogs, whose unfortunate ultimate destiny and eminent future was to be put to death by euthanasia.

But not this night.

Patsy’s luck was about to turn for the better. A New Jersey based volunteer organization named Woof Love Rescue who regularly teams up with another rescue organization, Animal USA, visits compounds like this one in Georgia every 28 days. And that night they were there negotiating the captured dogs freedom.

Their mission is to rescue abandoned puppies and dogs and bring them to New Jersey for adoption. The rescued dogs and puppies are brought back and temporarily placed in homes for foster care until permanent homes can be found.

Patsy found herself in the foster care home of dear friends of ours. This was their first warm hearted venture helping dogs and puppies to provide temporary shelter, love, and needed medical care, as well as finding permanent forever homes for these once forgotten pets.

My friends did not know Patsy’s real name, all they knew was, they were going to give this dog some loving. Because this was a temporary sheltering, my buddy came up with an interesting name for their new temporary
house guest.

He named her Kamir – as in Come Here! He felt that this new name would work well regardless of the new pet owner’s choice of name for their new pet. Any time they wanted to call their new house guest they shouted
“Kamir!” and the dog came running.

I did not know this about my friends but they have always had a soft spot for pets, especially dogs and they’ve had several dogs during their
many years of marriage.

A few weeks went by and Kamir received excellent love and care. My friend had a barbecue with several of our buddies and me. One of our friends, Michael Grass, owner of “The Jewelry Loft” here in Medford, is a huge pet lover and always had a house full of animals that he loved and cared for. Upon meeting Kamir, Michael fell hard, and instantly knew it would be a match made in heaven because Michael was down to having just one pet, a dog named Lucy. Michael hoped the two dogs would become great friends.

Michael took all the steps needed and adopted his new pet. After a couple of weeks, Kamir, now named Ricky (as in Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball in “I love Lucy”) and Lucy join Michael at his jewelry store every day and
all are very happy.

During these past six months of lockdowns, political disruptions, business closings, mass unemployment, and just plain bad news, it is so heartwarming and refreshing hearing stories like this.

I know three things for sure: you don’t read about it because it’s not published in any newspaper or shown on TV, but we are surrounded by good hearted people who help others and accomplish wonderful deeds all the time.

And two, our pets are more than just pets, they are truly family members who give unconditional love and comfort during times of
stress and discomfort.
